Macular Degeneration Management
Macular degeneration, often referred to as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is a common eye condition that affects the central part of the retina known as the macula. This area is responsible for sharp, central vision—what you use to read, drive, and recognise faces. As the macula deteriorates, it can lead to blurry or distorted vision and, in more advanced cases, a central blind spot.
There are two main types of AMD: dry and wet. Dry AMD is more common and progresses slowly, whereas wet AMD is less common but can lead to rapid vision loss if not treated promptly. Typical symptoms include difficulty reading fine print, needing brighter light for close work, straight lines appearing wavy, or a dark patch in your central vision.
Early detection is crucial. I use state-of-the-art imaging and diagnostic tools to assess the health of your retina and identify early signs of macular damage. If AMD is detected, I will tailor a treatment plan to your specific condition. For dry AMD, lifestyle changes, nutritional support and regular monitoring can help slow progression. For wet AMD, advanced therapies such as anti-VEGF injections are used to control abnormal blood vessel growth and preserve vision.
With years of experience in medical retina and a strong background in clinical research, I will ensure that patients receive the most up-to-date and effective treatments available. If you’re experiencing changes in your vision or have a family history of macular degeneration, booking an assessment could make a significant difference to your long-term eye health.
